Abstract:
There are two main scenarios in initiating magnetospheric substorms. One is magnetic reconnection based on the concept of magnetic field line motion while the other is current disruption based on the concept of plasma instability. These two concepts are not exclusive of each other. With the present day simulations of these two scenarios, it is possible to distinguish these two based on their characteristics. In this presentation, the main features of these two concepts are summarized and compared.
