California Coastal Ocean Nowcast and Forecast System
California Coastal Ocean Nowcast and Forecast System
Abstract:
This talk will describe the California coastal ocean nowcast and forecast system. The model is based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) with a horizontal resolution of 3 km and 40 vertical layers. A multi-scale 3-dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation scheme is used to assimilate both in situ and remotely sensed data from both satellite and land-based platforms. Model sensitivity experiments with different lateral boundary conditions and data sets being assimilated will be presented. An ensemble modeling methodology will be presented to estimate the forecast uncertainties. The hindcast/nowcast/forecast fields are validated against available observations. Preliminary results coupling the ocean circulation model with biogeochemistry and ecosystem models will be presented.
