An investigation of terrain effects on the global kinetic energy spectra using an idealized test case
Abstract:
Results from an idealized test case to explore impacts of terrain on kinetic energy spectra will be presented. We modified the Held & Suarez test case in global high-resolution models and investigate the role of gravity waves induced by orography. Using analysis for the divergent and rotational modes, the interaction between topography and flow will be shown, and the sensitivity of kinetic energy spectra to the smoothness of topography will be also introduced. Other sensitivities associated numerical configurations for the transition of slope and the tailing-off of spectra will be discussed.
