Pca's with Physics Iiustrating ENSO Air Ocean Interactions

Standard EOF’s have no inherent physics. Propagating (or complex) EOF’s allow discovery of coherent, robust moving patterns, including group velocity information. Quaternions are used to discover the joint propagating structure of E-W wind stress and SST anomalies of ENSO events. The results demonstrate the known ocean-atmospheric coupling during strong ENSO’s.
