B41F:
Soil Organic Matter Dynamics on Mineral Surfaces: Nano- to Global-Scale Processes I Posters

Session ID#: 10306

Session Description:
Soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics are often studied from the perspective of biological activity and the resulting rate of carbon and nitrogen mineralization.  However, the importance of SOM stabilization at a range of time scales and the combined microbial, mineralogical, and physicochemical controls of stability have not been explored extensively until recently.  In order to develop a better understanding of SOM dynamics, mechanistic approaches must be employed that bridge nanoscale with global processes, from a basic science perspective.  We invite submissions that focus on the mineral – SOM interface that explain C and N dynamics using novel approaches.  We particularly encourage submissions that employ in vitro/in situ approaches and utilize biochemistry, mineralogy, redox gradients, aggregation kinetics, microbiology/biofilms to develop a better physicochemical understanding of the interactions with crystalline and short range order minerals that affect the capacity and efficiency of soils to stabilize C.
