B11G:
Organic Matter as an Integrated Signal of Climate and Land Use Change from Source to Sea I Posters

Session ID#: 10325

Session Description:
Fluvial ecosystems are now recognized as important components of the global carbon cycle. Watersheds from the Arctic to the Tropics are naturally distinct ecological units linking terrestrial ecosystems, from soils and glaciers, through rivers and estuaries to the oceans. The geochemical composition of rivers draining watersheds represents an integrated signal of processes occurring within watersheds. We solicit contributions that consider molecular to watershed scale processes with respect to understanding organic matter dynamics. Research utilizing biomarkers, natural abundance and radiocarbon isotopes (including compound specific), spectrophotometric techniques (e.g. absorbance, fluorescence), advanced mass spectrometry (e.g. FTICR-MS), NMR and other characterization and isolation techniques to understand organic matter dynamics and reactivity (e.g. photo and biolability) across the terrestrial-aquatic continuum is encouraged. Studies utilizing these analyses to examine OM processing and fate and how this may be changing due to land-use (e.g. deforestation) or climate change (e.g. permafrost thaw) are particularly encouraged.
