MR41C:
Shale, Mudstone, and Clay Mineral Multiphysics I Posters

Session ID#: 10425

Session Description:
Intense interest in gas shale plays, long-term storage of CO2, and disposal of nuclear waste spur much research on coupled processes of fine-grained rocks. Fracture complexity strongly governs producible reservoir volumes and mitigates risk to groundwater resources. CO2 storage may require advanced technologies to reliably heal leaks in the mudstone caprock. Design of deep borehole or other subsurface storage of nuclear waste requires confirmation of slow transport processes in deep, hard-to-characterize flow systems. This Session invites researchers in various disciplines to discuss and interact on the topic of multiphysics of fine-grained rocks with special emphasis on multi-scale characterization, analysis, and performance assessment. This includes but is not limited to assessment of fracture networks and their evolution during gas shale development or CO2 storage, neutron scattering descriptions of pore structure and/or fractures, and laboratory experiments and modeling of coupled processes.
