T33G:
Building the Andes: From Mantle Geodynamics to Surface Processes II

Session ID#: 10732

Session Description:
As the archetype of modern Cordilleran orogenic systems, the Andes define the highest and longest mountain belt associated with ocean-continent convergence.  Crustal thicknesses can reach up to 70 km, yet the timing and mechanisms of Andean deformation and uplift are debated.  The processes leading to upper plate shortening and crustal thickening in such Cordilleran orogenic systems remain a fundamental scientific issue.  Recent advances in Andean tectonics show important connections among mantle dynamics, lithospheric processes, crustal geology, surface geomorphology and climate.  This session aims at bringing together geologists and geodynamicists to combine geologic data with geodynamic models to explore the connections between deep Earth and the surface.  We invite contributions that evaluate various aspects of Andean geology, including, but not limited to, the records of deformation, uplift, erosion, sedimentation, and paleoenvironment along with contributions presenting geodynamic and tectonic models with emphasis on predictions for the dynamic response of the surface.
