GC41B:
Climate Variability and the African Environment, Water Resources, and Food Security I Posters

Session ID#: 7931

Session Description:
Various parts of Africa have been severely impacted by frequent droughts and/or flooding over the past several decades due to their sensitivity to complex interactions and feedbacks between land-cover/land-use change, rainfall variability, surface and ground-water dynamics, river and floodplain interactions, atmospheric circulation patterns, as well as local and transported aerosol and greenhouse gas emissions. This session encourages interdisciplinary studies aimed at unraveling the links between these phenomena and associated processes and outcomes. Improved understanding of the mechanisms and spatiotemporal scales of variability and reliable climate predictions on seasonal-to-decadal timescales will help mitigate the environmental and socio-economic impacts of climate variability and change, and enhance sustainable livelihood, especially water availability and food security.
