Biogeochemistry of Rivers and Soils in the Urban Ecosystem and Their Climate Impacts Posters
Session ID#: 8010
Session Description:
Urban water resources risk being increasingly degraded as populations shift to cities and impervious surfaces, combined-flow sewers and non-point source contaminants rise. There is burgeoning interest in reclaiming urban waterways, reducing what has been termed "urban stream syndrome". In addition, soil carbon dynamics in urban ecosystems are understudied and are not represented in global climate models. In this session we will focus on what is known, and not known, about the changing biogeochemistry of urban rivers, the carbon exchange between soil and atmosphere in urban ecosystems, and the influence they may have on global climate. Studies investigating mitigation efforts are also welcome.
