H31E:
Environmental Impacts of Hydraulic Fracturing: Processes, Monitoring, Stewardship, and Solutions I Posters

Session ID#: 8370

Session Description:
Hydraulic fracturing has become the main stimulation method for producing oil and gas from low-permeability formations; however, several concerns have been raised about adverse environmental impacts, including depletion of surface water and groundwater, contamination from surface spills and improper surface casing, improper disposal practices and potential contamination from stray gas (methane) and additives. In this dynamic field, solutions to these environmental issues are being explored, including use of brackish water and reuse/recycling of flowback and produced water to reduce consumption of freshwater, improved knowledge of the behavior of additives in the subsurface, new geochemical approaches for assessing stray gas, and advances in well construction standards and water management. We welcome abstracts investigating hydrological or geochemical processes associated with hydraulic fracturing, or documenting environmental concerns and incidents as well as creative solutions to address them.
