Geochemistry and Microbiology of Oxic and Suboxic Deep-Sea Pelagic Sediments II Posters

Session Description:
Recent deep sea coring and drilling expeditions have determined that substantial portions of pelagic sediments are wholly oxic or suboxic. What are the implications of this geochemical regime for the subseafloor biosphere and for paleoceanographic reconstruction? This session constrains the links between chemistry and biology that underpin subseafloor microbial activity and modify paleoceanographic records. Pursuit of these objectives require identifying the controlling factors that dictate sediment and porewater chemical composition and redox gradients. We encourage contributions that analyze samples from recent expeditions, utilize empirical or modeled data to predict properties of the subseafloor biosphere or past oceans, and explore the link between sediment chemistry and microbial life in these oxic and suboxic regions.
