An Interoperability Challenge for the Geosciences I
Session ID#: 8417
Session Description:
Data and information interoperability is needed for addressing global grand challenges such as climate change that require synthesis of data from many geosciences disciplines. Interoperability solutions, addressed in GEOSS, NSF EarthCube and elsewhere, include federation, rigid standards and/or brokering/mediation. For recent implementations, advances in cloud technologies and software are key enabling capabilities, moving from a Client-Server to a Cloud-Brokering-Server archetype, that are addressing the technical challenges. The next generation of issues will be creating a structure for operational sustainability. While operations may not be a traditional concern of an individual geoscientist, the willingness to learn about and use an information service is directly related to information system sustainability. The Research Data Alliance has a Broker Governance working group which is addressing sustainability in three areas: models for sustainability, agreements required for implementation and use cases to test various options. This session will invite presentations addressing long-term sustainability of interoperability solutions.
