H51D:
Estimation of Spatial and Temporal Variability of Land Surface Hydrological and Thermal Processes I Posters

Session ID#: 8751

Session Description:
It is projected that a majority of the population will soon live in arid or semi-arid regions due to expected increases in extent of these regions and expansion of tropics globally. This will increase competition between humans and nature for limited water resources. However, arid zone hydrology is not as well understood as that in other hydro-climates, primarily due to high non-linearity and lack of reliable data. This session will showcase the latest understanding in water, heat, and contaminant transport processes in arid regions at multiple spatio-temporal scales, and highlight differences from processes in other hydro-climates. We welcome papers highlighting links between soil properties, topography, biodiversity, microbial activity, biogeochemistry, ecosystem functioning, and human activities at all scales, and how these affect process parameterizations for modeling and monitoring at the various scales. Studies that shed light on the challenges to hydrologic modeling and/or measurements in arid/semi-arid regions are also welcome.
