PP53B:
Decoding Paleoenvironmental Proxies: Developments, Challenges, Refinements, and Mechanisms III Posters

Session ID#: 8756

Session Description:
Paleoclimate work is based on proxy data; new proxies are emerging for climate variables such as oxygenation, pH, and temperature, while mature proxies like oxygen isotopes continue to be refined. It is important to examine the underlying assumptions in proxy records, from environmental effects, to calibration, to diagenesis. New proxies fill gaps discovered as established proxies are vetted and improved. Developing high fidelity paleoenvironment data requires appreciation of the limitations, assumption and mechanisms by which proxies work. New technologies and advances in both experimental and computational methods are revealing the underlying processes that control geochemical proxies. Examples include the use of nanoscale imaging, synchrotron methods and spectroscopy, novel isotopic and trace element systems and techniques such as atom probe imaging. We invite contributions on the science related to the development, testing, and refinement of proxies enabled by cutting-edge developments in analytical methods and models.
