B13K:
Understanding Microbial Processes, Dependencies, and Impacts through 'omics II
Session ID#: 8779
Session Description:
Across ecosystems, microbe-mineral-organic matter interactions regulate the cycling of key elements and greenhouse gases. The majority of these environmental microbes are known only by their 16S rRNA gene sequences and their functional roles in the environment are poorly defined. Thankfully, the toolkit available to environmental scientists has expanded in recent years, allowing for insights into the roles of uncultivated microbes in mediating interactions between microbes and their milieux. This session will bring together researchers using large-scale datasets that couple biogeochemical surveys with (meta)genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. We welcome submissions across ecosystem types that employ ‘omics approaches to improve microbial models, enable genome reconstruction, and enhance microbial interaction networks. Our goal is to highlight novel analytical approaches that move beyond cataloging microbial communities and into unraveling the role of microbes in the natural complexity of biogeochemical systems. Co-convenor: Susannah Tringe (DOE Joint Genome Institute).
