The Mechanism of Tectonic Tremor I

Session Description:
Low and very low frequency earthquakes detected within tectonic tremor bursts suggest brittle shear failure occurs at the source of tremor. Tremor occurs on subduction and transform plate boundaries and at a variety of depths. Grain scale deformation mechanisms may vary at these different locations, yet tremor is observed to have similar seismological characteristics. The physical conditions and processes that drive transitional behavior in mixed rheology deformation may be key to understanding whether there are common mechanisms at the source of tremor. In this session, we hope to include seismological observations, geological constraints, and insights from modeling and experiments to encourage an extensive review of tremor source processes. We also invite studies of microseismicity, repeating earthquakes and other phenomena in transitional fault regions that may shed light on the mechanisms of tremors and their implications for earthquake nucleation processes.
