The Concept and Conduct of Decadal Surveys and Strategies for Developing Research Priorities
Session ID#: 8959
Session Description:
Federal science agencies have often sought advice from the National Research Council (NRC) to identify high priority research initiatives and in some cases to identify the technological investments required to undertake these initiatives. Particularly in the space sciences, studies described as “decadal surveys” have become influential in setting the agenda for research and major infrastructure investments. Based on these past studies, the NRC’s Space Studies Board has conducted a study called The NRC’s Space Science Decadal Surveys: Lessons Learned and Best Practices that will be published in 2015. NSF has also commissioned the NRC for decadal planning. Several divisions in the NSF Geosciences directorate have asked the NRC for decadal-scale strategic planning advice on research and infrastructure investments. With three 2015 publications, and other studies underway, it is an opportune time for a session on the concept and process of decadal surveys. Speakers will include members of the NRC committees.
