Advances in Global Water Resources and Drought Management through UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme Posters

Session Description:
For more than 40 years, the UNESCO International Hydrogical Programme (IHP) has facilitated an interdisciplinary and integrated approach to watershed and aquifer management, which incorporates the social dimension of water resources, and promotes and develops international research in hydrological and freshwater sciences.  As global water issues increase in importance, the IHP network of more than IHP 50 centers is well poised to play key regional and international roles in improving water management, facilitating transboundary water sharing, and enhancing water research and data sharing.  Nevertheless, these centers have a record of mixed success and likely represent an under-utilized global resource. This session addresses the following issues:  Under what conditions have IHP centers been most successful in advancing water research and in translating research into meaningful actions? What can be learned from successful academic – governmental IHP partnerships, and how can those partnerships be strengthened to improve water science?
