SA41B:
Vertical Coupling of the Lower Atmosphere to the Thermosphere-Ionosphere System II Posters

Session ID#: 9149

Session Description:
The coupling between the lower atmosphere (0-90 km altitude) and the thermosphere-ionosphere (TI) system is complex, dynamic, and not well understood. During the last extreme solar minimum, the effects of strong, persistent meteorological disturbances were measured in the ionosphere, and possible coupling mechanisms were identified. These mechanisms include changes in the dynamics of the background neutral atmosphere, modification of tides, and subsequent variations in electric field. This session solicits contributions from theoretical, modeling, and observational perspectives that address the following key unresolved questions regarding vertical coupling:

(1) What are the effects of lower atmospheric forcing on the TI system in the low and mid-latitude regions?

(2) What are the possible vertical coupling mechanisms in the low and mid-latitude region?

(3) How can we characterize the variability in the middle atmosphere and TI under various geospace conditions and possible connections using both modeling and observational methods?
