The 25 April 2015 M7.8 Gorkha, Nepal, Earthquake Sequence: Lessons Learned
Session ID#: 9686
Session Description:
The 2015 Mw7.8 Nepal earthquake is the largest event to strike the mountainous country in over 80 years. The mainshock and large aftershocks taken a heavy toll on lives and property in cities and villages throughout the country. Geodetic, remote sensing, seismic, and other data will provide unprecedented illumination of this event, and the ground motions it generated within and beyond the Kathmandu Valley. Although the earthquake was in many ways expected, preliminary data and analyses raise questions of critical importance for both earthquake science and seismic hazard. Forensic engineering investigations will also be critical to understand the performance of traditional versus more modern structures. We invite a broad range of contributions focusing on scientific, engineering, and social lessons of this important earthquake, as well as contributions focusing on implications for future hazard in the Himalayan region.
