Abstract:
Data management has always been integral to the scientific method. As research programs become more diverse with respect to scientific discipline and involve larger teams of collaborators, the ability to manage ever increasing volumes and complexity of data has emerged as an important skill. Universities are offering formal training in data and information science with the ability to earn a higher degree in those fields. This presentation will include observations from more than three decades as a manager of marine research data. What are the essential skills required to succeed as a data scientist and what are some of the effective strategies that contribute to success over the long-term?
