Heating of the Solar Chromosphere and Connections to the Transition Region and Corona

Abstract:

We present observations of the chromosphere and transition region from IRIS and the SST. These observations are interpreted using 1D semi-empirical numerical experiments, 1D radiaton-MHD simulations and 3D "realistic" radiation-MHD simulations spanning the solar atmosphere from the convection zone to the corona. A picture is emerging of the energy balance in the solar chromosphere and connections to the transition region and corona.
