Abstract:
We present simulation results from the self-consistently coupled SAMI3/RCM code on the impact of geomagnetic storms on the ionosphere/plasmasphere system. We consider the campaign storm events: March 17-18, 2013 and September 1-5, 2012. We find that the storms can significantly affect the low- to mid-latitude ionosphere (e.g., stormtime enhanced densities (SEDs)), as well as the plasmasphere (e.g., plume-like development). We compare and contrast the two storms and compare simulation results to available data.
