Fluxes at the canopy interface: Synthesizing across the canopy, boundary layer and regional scales

Abstract:
Fluxes of biogenic volatile organic carbon (VOC) transfer reactive carbon from the biosphere to the atmosphere. Modeling these fluxes and their chemical fate utilizes both chemical and physical parameterizations that depend on the representation of the forest canopy and turbulence within and above the forest canopy, as well as the emissions, deposition and chemical speciation. Depending on the chemical species, the turbulent component timescale competes with the atmospheric reactivity that can control biosphere-atmosphere exchange. A suite of models, ranging from 1D models that represent the canopy structure to large eddy simulation modeling to regional scale atmospheric chemistry modeling, can elucidate the role of the land surface in the drivers of boundary layer atmospheric chemistry.
