Abstract:
The informatics community is currently making the promise of a ‘Big Data’ future a reality, but the array of terms, technologies and personnel can be daunting. If your world is FORTRAN and FTP, how can you exploit Python, Semantically Linked Data and data center APIs? How can the scientist in the field take part in this cyber-revolution and go beyond data websites for discovery, access, data use?

The Geoscience community needs a resource that explains what Big Data technologies are, how we got here, why we are here, why you should get involved, and who is out there to help.
