NW Pacific Marginal Basins: Geodynamics and Hazard I Posters

Session Description:
The boundary between easternmost Eurasia and and NW North America with the NW Pacific Ocean is marked by a series of marginal basins such as the Aleutian Basin, the Komandorsky Basin, the Kurile Basin, and the marginal basin complex that lies between Japan, Korea, and mainland Asia. These all formed as backarc basins during Cenozoic time, but it is unknown whether they formed by similar or different mechanisms (backarc basins vs. trapped Pacific seafloor; continental rifting vs. seafloor spreading).  Understanding how these basins formed is further complicated because none are now actively opening and all contain thick sediments. They pose important geodynamic problems but because some of these basins lie near regions with rapidly developing economies and present increasingly significant natural hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis. This session will foster broad discussion and stimulate joint efforts to study and better understand these marginal basins and the risks these pose.
