Session ID#: 12324
Session Description:
Our session will address near-Earth objects (NEOs) and the development of ways to assess and mitigate the risk they pose to human life, infrastructure, ecosystems, and the global environment. Risk assessment and mitigation includes characterization of material properties, shape, physical attributes (including internal structure and surface morphology), small body dynamics, spin states, and Earth impact effects. Characterization data are required for impact simulations and planetary defense scenario development using high-performance computer simulations. These models inform mission designers of the suitability and effectiveness of various mitigation methods, including kinetic impactors and nuclear explosive devices. We encourage a broad spectrum of opinion in our effort to bring together diverse research efforts for this session.
