Session Description:
While the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) exerts pronounced influences on weather and climate worldwide, and serves as one of the primary predictability sources for extended-range forecasts, realistic representation of the MJO is still one of the grand challenges for climate and weather forecasting models. Meanwhile, no strong consensus exists on the fundamental physics of the MJO. To help assess recent progress on understanding MJO physics and build toward more reliable subseasonal forecasts and climate projections, this session invites presentations describing recent progress in various aspects of MJO study. Contributed presentations may describe recent progress on new observations of important MJO processes through innovative use of available observations (satellites, field campaigns, etc), theoretical understanding of MJO physics, model development efforts towards improved MJO simulations and prediction, including process-oriented diagnostics of key model physics for the MJO, and studies that explore prediction skill and predictability of the MJO and associated extreme phenomena.
