Session Description:
This session will consider recent progress in understanding and quantifying the processes that govern oceanic crust accretion and evolution of the oceanic lithosphere. Oceanic crust is formed from percolating mantle melts through complex processes involving melt-rock reactions, melt crystallization, syn- to post-magmatic deformation, and interactions during hydrothermal circulation. Hydrothermal systems are major heat exchangers that cool the crust and provide niches for microbial activity in the subsurface. Our understanding of these complex systems requires having an integrated view of the various processes that affect the lithosphere from the mantle to the shallow subsurface. In this view, we encourage contributions related to igneous accretion, deformation, hydrothermal circulation, and to the development of microbial life in these extreme environments, as well as more general approaches related to the architecture and to the geodynamic evolution of mid-ocean ridges. Results related to recent ocean drilling (IODP) expeditions are particularly welcomed.
