Session Description:
Land-atmosphere interactions are a key component of the Earth system, yet remain a challenge to observe and model. Water, energy, and carbon transfer between the land surface and planetary boundary layer (PBL) have unique and critical impacts on weather and climate variability, predictability, and hydrological extremes such as drought. Unfortunately, traditional measurements only provide an incomplete picture of such relationships, resulting in poorly understood linkages of water and energy cycle components. This session focuses on the characterization of water, energy, and carbon cycle fluxes, and subsequent feedbacks and coupling between the surface and PBL. In recent years, the scientific community has observed a revolution in global data availability from satellite remote sensing and large-scale ground-based networks. We invite observation, satellite, and model-based studies that highlight the importance of advanced observing systems to better understand and predict land-atmosphere coupling (from bedrock to boundary layer) across a range of spatiotemporal scales.
