Session ID#: 12431

Session Description:
Coastal flooding can have devastating impacts with wide ranging social, economic, and environmental consequences. Recent significant events, like Cyclone Xynthia on the French Atlantic coast, Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, Cyclone Xaver in the North Sea, and Tropical Cyclone Winston in Fiji have dramatically emphasized the vulnerability of low-lying densely populated coastlines. In order to plan effective adaptation to coastal flooding hazards it is essential to improve understanding of extreme sea level and wave events and the associated impacts, exploiting both observational and modeling data sets. This session seeks contributions from studies that have: examined changes in extreme sea levels and waves including the role of climate change and variability; undertaken statistical analyses of extreme water levels; assessed the various types of impacts (e.g., inundation, erosion, ecosystem degradation); or taken an integrated approach toward analyzing the vulnerability of complex coastal systems to extreme sea levels.
