Session Description:
Recent observations from Mars orbiters, landers, and rovers provide a wealth of information on the Martian atmosphere. Surface weather is monitored by the Curiosity rover, while several orbiters perform atmospheric observations, covering regions from the near-surface to the upper atmosphere. While observations have led to considerable progress in understanding the structure of the Martian atmosphere, the challenges of today are the identification and quantification of underlying dynamical, chemical, and radiative processes that govern the Martian atmosphere. This session solicits observational and theoretical contributions that provide deeper insight into these processes in the present-day atmosphere of Mars, including upper atmospheric processes. Studies on the connection between the upper and the lower atmosphere are particularly encouraged.
