Session Description:
Fragmented, cumulative plutonic rocks are variably present in ejecta of many volcanic systems in different tectonic settings. These rocks provide a window into sub-volcano magmatic plumbing systems. They are products of magmatic differentiation in the crust and crust-mantle transition zone, and record varying extents of interaction between melts and crystals. Formation of mafic cumulates is key to the evolution of the Earth’s crust. Given the importance of these processes, there are numerous current studies focused on cumulative plutonic rocks and intrusive complexes in volcanic arcs, mid-ocean ridges and intra-plate settings. This session will bring together multidisciplinary studies that focus on cumulate formation and the larger-scale role cumulates play in the generation and evolution of magmas and the crust. Contributions are sought from all relevant studies involving cumulates including, but not limited to, field investigations, textural studies, geochemistry, mineralogy, experiments, geophysics, numerical and thermodynamic modelling.
