Session Description:
Some of the greatest uncertainty in future climate projections stems from how cloud processes and the large-scale atmospheric circulation will respond to a warming climate. Traditionally, these problems have been tackled independently, but recent research efforts have emphasized that cloud and circulation changes are inextricably linked. Circulation changes will impact the environment for cloud formation, while at the same time, the radiative heating anomalies associated with cloud changes are likely to affect the location and strength of the atmospheric circulation. This session aims to capitalize on the growing body of literature on this topic, synthesizing previous results and spurring additional discussion for future research directions. Both observational and modeling studies are welcome, with preference given to studies emphasizing the interaction between cloud processes and the large-scale atmospheric circulation (Intertropical Convergence Zone, Hadley and Walker circulations, subtropical dry zones, mid-latitude jet streams, etc.) in either the present or future climate.
