Session Description:
The Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM), which occurred circa 56 million years ago (Ma), has become one of the most captivating and perplexing episodes marking Earth’s history. Within a geologically brief moment, Earth surface temperatures rose by about 6°C. Massive amounts of carbon entered the ocean and atmosphere, and terrestrial and marine organisms experienced major radiations and turnovers. However, the initial trigger and subsequent causes of this event remain highly debated, and the consequences are still being discovered. There is also the issue of how the PETM relates to the surrounding Paleogene and broader Phanerozoic. Presentations will be focused on the PETM, including links to other time intervals, and especially how it relates to current and predicted changes in global climate and geochemical cycling.
