Session Description:
Much progress has been achieved in understanding the variations and drivers in the ionosphere and thermosphere (IT) through advances in measurements and modeling. However, the maximum potential in our nowcast and forecast capability of the IT system for the operational community has not been fully realized. Significant work in predicting satellite drag effects, satellite surface/deep charging events, scintillations or disruptions in radio communication, radar clutter, and long term IT climate trends remains to be done. In this session, we will explore what those challenges are and attempt to delineate the areas where NASA, NOAA, NSF, DoD, and other agencies need to make investments in space weather data services to meet the goals of the new National Space Weather Strategy and Action Plan. This session welcome all contributions on the IT measurements, models and applications needed to move our field forward and show relevance to the science and applications community.
