Session ID#: 12622
Session Description:
Tropical-extratropical interactions and the resulting teleconnections have emerged as an untapped source of predictability on time scales between weather and climate. Tropical heating associated with organized convection, including the Madden-Julian Oscillation, strongly impacts extra-tropical circulation subseasonal variability. Tropical convection itself may be excited/maintained by extra-tropical fluctuations. Improving the prediction of mid-latitude variability on intraseasonal timescales requires a new integrated understanding of the processes involved in tropical-extratropical interactions. Activities supporting this endeavor should be enhanced during the proposed Year of Tropics-Midlatitudes Interactions and Teleconnections (YTMIT).
This session invites contributions supporting YTMIT, focused on: (a) recent advancements in assessing the intraseasonal tropical-extratropical interactions and teleconnections in observations, (b) theoretical understanding of mechanisms underlying the interactions between the tropical and midlatitude regions and the resulting teleconnections on intraseasonal time scales, and (c) the impact of teleconnections on prediction skill of Week 3 to 4 forecasts.
