Session Description:
The chemical transformation and fate of naturally emitted hydrocarbons in the atmosphere are influenced by anthropogenic emissions. Known and proposed mechanisms include a control of oxidation rates by nitrogen oxides, the roles played by acidity, organosulfate and alkylnitrate species in forming secondary aerosol, and the control of aerosol water as a reactive medium. As a result of these interactions, the products of biogenic hydrocarbons can be enhanced relative to their natural, preindustrial levels. This has important implications for air quality management in regions with high biogenic emissions, and for the radiative forcing of climate. Recent field campaigns in the Southeast U.S. (Southeast Atmosphere Study), Amazonia (Green Ocean Amazon) and other regions focused on quantifying the interactions between biogenic and anthropogenic emissions to form secondary pollutants. The purpose of this session is to promote further analysis of data from these campaigns and to accelerate progress by combining results from different studies.
