Session Description:
While net biosphere-atmosphere CO
2 exchange is routinely measured at the ecosystem scale, the gross photosynthetic and respiratory fluxes are only loosely constrained at ecosystem, regional, and global scales. Uncertainty in the responses of photosynthesis and respiration to the environment at these scales is a major source of uncertainty in predictions of biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks under climate change.
Innovations in measurements and modeling have improved our ability to distinguish respiration and photosynthesis processes on many scales, using tools such as higher resolution modeling, CO2 flux partitioning, carbonyl sulfide, solar-induced fluorescence, and isotopes. We propose a session reporting advancements in our fundamental understanding of ecosystem-atmosphere carbon exchange. We especially invite novel applications that expand the boundaries of carbon cycle science.
