Session Description:
The concept of magma reservoirs arises in disciplines as diverse as igneous petrology, volcanology, seismology, geodesy, and structural geology, but what constitutes such a reservoir is not well defined. The petrological concept of large convecting magma chambers is difficult to reconcile with geophysical images of active magma systems, and the fraction of a crustal volume that must be liquid for that volume to be considered magma varies from discipline to discipline. We invite contributions that deal with physical and chemical aspects of magma reservoirs, including effects of partial melt percentage and distribution on seismic and electrical properties; reconciliation of field observations from plutonic systems with physical properties of modern systems; and interpretation of volcanic seismicity and surface deformation in terms of physical processes.
