Session ID#: 12676

Session Description:
Understanding the nature and variability of planetary atmospheres, the physical mechanisms governing these atmospheres, and their evolution are strong driving forces of planetary sciences and solar system exploration mission planning. While the long-term evolution of the Earth is constrained by geological and geochemical data, the evolutionary paths of other planets must be reconstructed from planetary mission data and astronomical observations. Models of planetary atmospheres use these observations to illuminate governing physical processes operating from the Earth to planets in our solar system and beyond. The rapidly increasing number of exoplanets provides a new opportunity for interdisciplinary collaborations between geoscientists, astronomers, biologists, and planetary scientists concerning the evolution of planetary atmospheres and planetary habitability. The session welcomes both observational and theoretical studies relevant to the evolution of planetary atmospheres, planet habitability, and the current physical states of planetary atmospheres in and outside of our solar system (including the Earth).
