Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions: Identifying and Integrating Physical, Biological, and Chemical Processes across Scales III Posters

Session ID#: 12695

Session Description:
Groundwater-Surface Water (GW-SW) interactions occur over a range of spatial and temporal scales, which are frequently complex, nested, and coupled. GW-SW interfaces (i.e. hyporheic and benthic zones, riparian corridors) often constitute biogeochemical hotspots, which have substantial impact on whole-stream processes of ecological significance, including thermal and flow regulation, nutrient cycling, microbial metabolism and habitat structure. Understanding the significance of these interfaces requires the ability to identify and integrate interdisciplinary principles from hydrology, geomorphology, biogeochemistry and aquatic ecology. Despite increased efforts in GW-SW interaction research, open questions remain in analyzing and predicting coupled physical, chemical, and biological process interactions across scales.

This session strives to link GW-SW investigators and their study of specific processes to facilitate a more holistic understanding of GW-SW processes (e.g., identifying linkages and separating complex signals into individual processes). Thematic sub-sessions will be organized around research identifying and integrating multidisciplinary processes through observations, experiments, and models.
