Session Description:
Credible modeling of present-day energy and moisture budgets provides a basis for prognostic assessments of future climate conditions. One of the key factors contributing to model prediction bias in the Polar regions is lack of sufficient near-surface observations that would allow for a more thorough evaluation and improvement of targeted parameterizations. In this session we invite contributions that use observations (paleo, in-situ, suborbital and space-borne) to help guide improvements in model parameterizations and predictions of atmospheric state, cloud fields, surface fluxes and sea-ice. We encourage abstract submissions using observations from recent campaigns (e.g., AWARE, ARISE, MIZOPEX, OIB). We welcome contributions related to development of new or improved observationally based products that can advance model representations of cloud fields, sea-ice/ice sheets or other modeled fields. Contributions that inform on future field missions and/or on development of new space borne sensors that can improve Polar weather and climate predictions are also sought.
