Session Description:
Erosion, transport and deposition by sediment-laden flows are the predominant mechanism through which terrestrial and subaqueous planetary surfaces are sculpted and reshaped. Net erosion or deposition by a flow is determined by its capacity to transport particulate material. Quantification of flow capacity is therefore of paramount importance for predicting the evolution of sediment routing systems, geohazard risks, and natural resource potential. However, source-to-sink systems comprise a range of environments from upland streams, lowland rivers and marine currents, with a variety of dynamic processes that each control sediment transport capacity. Our understanding of sediment transport capacity can be greatly enhanced through the integration of studies covering this diverse range of systems and processes. This session encourages both process- and product-based studies of sediment transport capacity covering a broad range of spatio-temporal scales. In particular, we invite contributions on modern and ancient systems, experimental studies and mathematical-numerical modelling.
