Session Description:
As climate change impacts and consequences become more apparent, there is increased interest in assessing how these changes will affect communities and how society will respond. Public and private sector entities are undertaking climate-focused assessments at multiple scales in anticipation of decisions about adaptation, mitigation, and building resilience. Some city and state governments have well-established assessment mechanisms, while others are just beginning. Business and industry-focused efforts have aimed at assessing risk and improving planning processes. Nationally, the U.S. Global Change Research Program is preparing the Fourth National Climate Assessment and implementing a sustained assessment process that delivers topical reports and enables synthesis of new information and insights. This session will highlight recent progress across assessments and seek to understand how to better align efforts. Presentations will explore approaches, provide examples of successful capacity building, identify critical dependencies for information and collaboration across scales, and showcase assessment-relevant tools.
