Session Description:
Forecasts by the IPCC and others indicate that keeping global warming below 2°C is now unlikely to be achieved solely by reduction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Methods of proactively removing GHG’s, especially CO2, from the atmosphere, or enhancing retention in natural sinks must now also be considered.  This session will host presentations that describe and analyze the capacity, cost, co-benefits, and impacts of the range of negative emissions methods thus far proposed.  These include biotic, chemical, geochemical, physical and hybrid approaches based on land or in the ocean. Strategies for integrating such methods into energy generation, e.g. biomass energy + carbon capture and storage, are welcome, as are presentations that explore the legal, governance, geopolitical and ethical implications of negative emissions.  Thus, this session will review the options for GHG removal and their merits, helping focus further research and policy.
