Modeling of the Cryosphere: High-Resolution Sea Ice Modeling Posters

Session Description:
High-resolution sea ice models with horizontal discretizations of 10km or less are increasingly being applied to Arctic and Southern Ocean prediction.  Such model integrations often transcend the intended resolution range of the sea ice models used, yet emerging science questions in coupled polar prediction demand that these models will regularly perform at even finer oceanic eddy-resolving scales (≤5km).  This session targets research addressing physical and numerical problems associated with high-fidelity sea ice prediction on daily to multi-decadal timescales.  Topics include modeling research that evaluates the fidelity of existing and new sea ice rheologies, model parameterizations that explicitly identify isostatic length scales of the pack, and methods used in models that relate scale invariance of sea ice fracture, mechanics of floe interactions, wave-ice interaction, high-frequency ice-ocean-atmosphere coupling and thermodynamic feedbacks. The session also focuses on poignant numerical methods, including discrete element modeling, and scale limits of continuum approximations.
