The Fate of Carbon in Plants and Terrestrial Ecosystems: From Respiration to Allocation II Posters

Session Description:
Carbon assimilated by plants in photosynthesis can be respired in the plants leaves, stems or roots, or by heterotrophic respiration in the soil. This respired carbon is usually lost from the ecosystem, while the remaining carbon can be allocated to growth, to roots exhudates, or to non-structural carbon reserves.

The fate of carbon assimilated by plants determines the rates of carbon sequestration, and strongly affects the plants and ecosystem resilience to environmental stress. However, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of:

1)      What drives the rate of plant and soil respiration?

2)      Is all respired carbon lost from the ecosystem, or is some of it recycled within it?

3)       What determines the allocation of nonstructural carbon to growth, metabolism and storage?

4)       How do respiration and allocation patterns change under changing environmental conditions and what are the consequences for biogeochemical cycles?

Contributions from observational, experimental and modelling studies, are invited.
