Session ID#: 12836

Session Description:
Measurements of global precipitation are necessary for monitoring earth’s water resources and the global hydrologic cycle, understanding climate variability, and improving weather prediction. To address this need, in early 2014 the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission “Core” satellite was launched by NASA and JAXA as a central platform in the GPM international satellite constellation.  The GPM Core, carrying a dual-frequency precipitation radar and multi-channel microwave imager, serves as on orbit calibration source and precipitation remote sensing laboratory to support radiometer measurements made by the larger GPM constellation.  Collectively, the GPM mission provides the next-generation of unified global precipitation products with accuracies and data latencies essential for research and integrated hydrometeorological applications, along with decades of satellite rain measurements. This session invites contributions in ALL areas of precipitation science including retrieval algorithms, ground validation, inter-sensor calibration and data fusion, and data utilization in hydrologic, weather, climate, and societal applications.
